Private label clothing from India means your designs, your branding, manufactured to your technical specifications by a vetted Indian factory. It starts at 25 pieces. At Greige, the garment sourcing platform connecting independent fashion brands with vetted Indian factories, private label production is what we do for every brand in our network. Not custom styles we designed, not off-the-shelf products with a new tag, but the brand founder's original designs built to spec.

The terminology confusion in this space is real and worth clearing up before you contact a single factory.

Private label vs white label vs wholesale: the distinction that matters

These three terms get conflated constantly in sourcing conversations. They describe different commercial relationships.

Private label means you own the design. You provide a tech pack (technical specification document, measurements, construction, materials, colourway) and the factory manufactures your design under your brand. The factory has no ownership of the product; they are providing manufacturing services. Every major DTC clothing brand operates this way.

White label means the factory has existing designs and you rebrand them. The factory sells the same product to multiple buyers under different labels. You may be able to specify colourway or minor modifications, but the core design is the factory's IP.

Wholesale means you buy the factory's or brand's existing finished inventory and resell it.

Most DTC brands searching for "private label manufacturing" want private label in the first sense: their own designs, manufactured to spec. The problem is that in India, some factory representatives use "private label" to mean white label (their designs, your label). Get explicit from your first message: "We want to manufacture our own original designs with our branding, custom OEM production."

Why India for private label

India is a strong private label manufacturing destination for most DTC brands in the US, UK and EU, for two reasons.

Trade treatment. India's tariff treatment has generally been more favourable than China's for US importers, which improves the post-customs math on the same garment. The exact rates move with policy, so build your landed cost from whatever duty applies at the time you ship rather than a number you read in a guide. The structural point holds: for US-market brands at meaningful volume, India tends to land cheaper than China once customs is included.

Manufacturing scale for DTC volumes. China's dominant export factories are structured for large unit runs. India's garment manufacturing is more fragmented, ranging from small specialist units to large multi-line operations, and the smaller end of that spectrum is purpose-built for the 25 to 500 unit international DTC orders that most independent brands actually place.

The cluster structure also helps. Knitwear concentrates in Tirupur (India's main knitwear hub), wovens around the NCR region, technical wear around Bengaluru. That means you can find specialist factories with deep supply chains rather than generalists who do everything adequately. For exporter verification, India's Apparel Export Promotion Council (AEPC) maintains a member directory worth checking.

How private label production works in India: the process

Step 1: Design and tech pack

Before you contact any factory, you need a tech pack. This is the document the factory quotes from: construction details, measurements (by size), fabric specification (weight in GSM, fibre content, weave type), colourway, trim specifications, label placement. Without it, factories can only give ballpark estimates.

If you have detailed design sketches and a spec sheet, a freelance tech pack designer can typically build a factory-ready document in a few days to a week. Greige manages this process for brands in our network as part of onboarding.

Step 2: Factory identification and RFQ

With a tech pack, you can request formal quotes (RFQ, Request for Quote). The factory needs your tech pack, your target quantity, your delivery requirement and your destination country to price accurately.

In India, the right factory depends on your garment type. Knitwear (T-shirts, sweatshirts, hoodies) goes to Tirupur, Tamil Nadu. Woven shirts, trousers and structured garments go to Noida or Gurgaon (NCR). Technical and activewear goes to Bengaluru. For the full approach to finding and verifying Indian factories, see how to find low-MOQ manufacturers in India.

Step 3: Sampling

A production-quality sample based on your tech pack is the factory's first output. For a new design from a Tirupur factory, sampling commonly takes two to three weeks after tech pack approval. This is where construction errors surface, and it is far better to find them here than in a bulk run. Factories often charge a sample fee that varies with construction complexity, and some waive it against a confirmed bulk order.

Step 4: Bulk production

After sample approval with amendments confirmed, bulk production commonly runs three to six weeks for most garment types at DTC brand volumes. Complex constructions, embellishments, or multi-component garments run longer. A simple jersey tee runs toward the shorter end; a multi-panel fleece hoodie with custom embroidery runs toward the longer end.

Step 5: QC inspection

For first orders with a new factory, third-party quality control inspection is not optional. An independent QC agency (QIMA, Intertek, Bureau Veritas, SGS, or a local Indian agency) inspects a statistically valid random sample from the finished bulk under AQL 2.5 protocols before shipment. Local Indian agencies are generally cheaper than the international firms; rates and per-day piece coverage vary by location and garment complexity, so get a quote against your specific order.

Step 6: Shipping

FOB pricing from Indian factories means export documentation is the factory's responsibility to the port. From there you add sea freight, a freight forwarder fee, and import duty. Sea freight from India to the US West Coast typically runs three to four weeks in transit. Freight cost per unit drops as order quantity rises, since forwarder fees are largely fixed per shipment and spread across the units.

What private label clothing costs from India

There is no single number here, and any guide that gives you one is guessing. FOB cost depends on the fabric, the construction complexity, the order size and the factory. A basic cotton jersey tee sits at the low end; a structured woven shirt or a multi-panel hoodie sits higher, and per-unit cost falls as volume rises.

What matters more than the FOB number is building the full landed cost before you set retail pricing: FOB, plus freight, plus the import duty that applies at the time you ship, plus the forwarder fee, plus QC. The garment costing sheet template walks through that formula so you can plug in live quotes rather than stale benchmarks.

Greige's coordination fee is a percentage of production and QC costs (not applied to freight or duties). It is a modest per-unit addition to the factory's price.

Private label timeline from brief to delivery

For a Tirupur knitwear factory, first order, 50 to 100 units:

  1. Tech pack ready to sampling: two to three weeks
  2. Sample approval to bulk production: three to five weeks
  3. Bulk production to QC and packing: included in the production window
  4. Sea freight, India to US West Coast: three to four weeks

Total: roughly nine to thirteen weeks from tech pack approval to US delivery. Add a week or two for customs clearance and final-mile. For the full week-by-week breakdown, see the India clothing production timeline.

One timeline note from the factory floor: Indian factories run on a festival calendar that most US brands do not track. Diwali (October or November) brings a stretch of factory closure days. If your production window overlaps, the timeline extends, so build it in now. Early-to-mid summer is generally a good window for a fall launch run, when factories are less booked and response times are faster.

Common private label mistakes for India sourcing

Using the wrong terminology. "Private label" is interpreted differently in India. Say "OEM manufacturing" or "custom production from our original designs" to be unambiguous.

Contacting factories without a tech pack. You will get ballpark estimates, not real quotes. Factories cannot price accurately from a sketch or a Pinterest board. A tech pack is the minimum viable brief.

Not verifying factory registration before sampling. Check GSTIN at gst.gov.in and IEC at dgft.gov.in before you share your designs or pay a sample fee. A factory that will not provide both is not a registered exporter.

Planning on FOB price alone. The FOB quote is the factory's price to the port. Import duty, freight, forwarder fees and QC are all additional. Plan the full landed picture before you commit to retail pricing.

FAQ

What is private label clothing manufacturing in India? Private label clothing manufacturing means your original designs are produced by an Indian factory under your brand. You own the design, supply the tech pack, and the factory manufactures to your specifications. Greige connects DTC brands with vetted Indian private label factories starting at 25 pieces per style.

How much does private label clothing manufacturing cost in India? There is no single number. FOB cost depends on the fabric, construction complexity, order size and factory, and per-unit cost falls as volume rises. Build your full landed cost from live quotes: FOB plus sea freight, plus the import duty that applies when you ship, plus freight forwarder fees spread across your order quantity, plus QC.

What is the minimum order for private label clothing in India? Greige's factory network starts at 25 pieces per style per colourway for private label production. Standard factory minimums in Tirupur are typically higher, often in the 50 to 100 piece range, and are negotiable with the right terms (higher deposit, reorder commitment, simplified construction). Below 25 units, production economics rarely work.

How long does private label production take in India? From tech pack approval to US delivery: roughly nine to thirteen weeks for a first knitwear order from a Tirupur factory (50 to 100 units). This covers two to three weeks sampling, three to five weeks bulk production, and three to four weeks sea freight. Add a week or two for customs and final-mile delivery.

Is private label clothing from India good quality? Quality from export-oriented Indian factories, especially those accredited for international DTC brand work, is comparable to major European and US private label supply chains. Tirupur has a long export manufacturing history. Quality depends on the factory, the spec, and the QC process. Third-party AQL inspection on first orders is strongly recommended.

What is the difference between private label and white label clothing? Private label means you own the original design and the factory manufactures to your technical specifications. White label means the factory's own existing designs are rebranded with your label. Most DTC clothing brands want private label: their own designs, manufactured to spec. In India, ask for "OEM production from our original designs" to avoid the terminology confusion.
